The Life Programme

The LIFE Programme

The new LIFE Environment and Climate Action Program aims to:

  • shift towards a clean, circular, energy-efficient, low-carbon economy that is resistant to climate change, also through the transition to clean energy;
  • stop and reverse the loss of biodiversity, thus contributing to sustainable development;
  • protect and improve the quality of the environment.

In the period between 2021 and 2027 LIFE is structured into two fields: environment and climate action. Each field branches into two sub-programmes:

1.ENVIRONMENT

  • NATURE AND BIODIVERSITY sub-programme. The Nature and Biodiversity sub-programme will aim to protect and restore Europe’s nature and halting and reversing biodiversity loss. It includes as an objective the fight against invasive exotic species, an objective in which the COOP Cortaderia project is framed.
  • CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND QUALITY OF LIFE sub-programme. The Circular economy and quality of life sub-programme aims to facilitate the transition towards a sustainable, circular, toxic-free, energy-efficient and climate-resilient economy and to protect, restore and improve the quality of the environment, either through direct interventions or by supporting the integration of those objectives in other policies.

2.CLIMATE ACTION

  • CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION sub-programme. This sub-programme will contribute to the shift towards a sustainable, energy-efficient, renewable energy-based, climate-neutral and resilient economy, thereby contributing to sustainable development. The climate sub-programme supports projects in the areas of farming, land use, peatland management, renewable energies and energy efficiency. The climate sub-programme also promotes integrated projects that implement EU policy and strategy on climate change adaptation.
  • CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION sub-programme. The LIFE Clean Energy Transition sub-programme continues to support the delivery of EU policies in the field of sustainable energy, in particular, the European Green Deal, the Energy Union (2030 energy and climate targets) and the European Union’s 2050 long-term decarbonisation strategy.
